It's really fascinating to me how Agnès Varda's films are full of literary and visual influences that have been woven into the fabric of the film. In Cléo de 5 à 7, Varda was inspired among others by Hans Baldung Grien's exploration of the marriage between Eros and Thanatos. She used this motif of a young girl embraced by death to convey the fear of cancer and mortality in the film, contributing to the overall atmosphere of trepidation in the story.
