#Paywalling access to standards isn't open - compared to that the anti-competitive #SSPL #license is open despite being designed to make it impossible to do any commercial offering with it (it's worse than #AGPLv3)...
I could at least understand if they said "Available for Licensing under #FRAND terms" if everyone gets to pay the same flat fee...

Personally it's still surprising to me that, as a case study, MongoDB is not primarily highlighted as an example of a firm that used the brand goodwill of "Open Source" as a way to implement a "Freemium" GTM strategy by choosing the most misunderstood and feared #FOSS license (#AGPLv3), then invented a new license that had a cloaked field-of-use restriction (or "constructive restriction" as @webmink calls it), attempting to warp the definition of #OpenSource

@geerlingguy Not that I doubt that companies want to make #money and that they want to enshure that no #GAFAM - espechally #Amazon - just yoinks their code and make a better #SaaS out of it whilst contributing 0 $ or code back into the project.
Stuff like the #SSPL & #AGPLv3 won't fix the issues - in fact they'd rather worsen the situation, only empowering the rich that can pay lawyers.

On the topic of hard-coded centralisation, it seems that the Microsoft-hosted version of Mastodon software [1] is *not* hardcoded to point to MS. If you are a Mastodon instance sysadmin, you should set the env variable SOURCE_BASE_URL and/or GITHUB_REPOSITORY to override the default link to MS [2][3] (in fact, per the #AGPLv3, you *must* do so if you modified the code).

As promised, lossless, transparent versions of the above 24px, 48px, and 32px. Icons that we declare Copyleft for the furthering, promotion and description of the fediverse and its #AGPLv3-licenced softwares.
At the time of writing, the orange versions of the pictured #PeertubeIcon have yet to be added to the project repository here:

@rain not necessarily...
Some #Copyleft and/or #OpenSource don't allow you to do that.
I'm not just talking about "published source" like #Tarsnap's client, but also #AGPLv3 and #SSPL which are basically designed to prevent competiton - #GAFAM or not - from making any commercial product.
Basically aiming at monopolizing any commercial product.

I want you all to think about this - as well as the fact why #Signal decided to #AGPLv3 it's "Client" Software and not FLOSS it's backend.

Searx [1] is #AGPLv3, privacy oriented, you can install it locally (I haven't tried) or you can use any instance from the recommended list [2] or find any other #Searx instance that you trust sufficiently. Some Fediverse instance sysadmins might be willing to run their own searx instance, e.g. searx.glammr.us, searx.newsie.social. Or even searx.mastodon.social.

If the FSF were more active / still relevant, and they were making a successor to the #AGPLv3 to cover new additional threats to #FreeSoftware and the four freedoms, such as LLMs slurping up #copyleft code without releasing the result under copyleft, what new clauses should be in the new license? If you were writing a new version of the #AGPL, what threats would you guard against, using what language?
If the FSF can't get their act together, is there any org that could produce such a license?

Section 5, "Conveying Modified Source Versions", of the Affero GPLv3 sounds very related to this protection.
It sounds to me that anyone is free to distribute modified versions of the software, but to do so, they must also release the source code for the modified version they release, also under the same license.
