And after!

Michael cleared out the pond and they got in there with the net. We were expecting to significantly more than we did (the pond is very well stocked) but they are wiley critters.

This was our first fish harvest, and as with all things, there's a serious . But, the pond got some important maintenance and we get to enjoy a nice meal of red pargo.

Sharing to document the 'before'.

One of our major challenges is staying on top of (and working with) out of control plant growth.

When the fish pond was finished, M planted a couple blue star nenufars to provide habitat and foster . But these things have become a problem. They've shaded the too much and there is no way to pass a net to harvest the fish!

So M is going to clear these plants out and we are going to eat some fish. Stay tuned.

The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (ASFA) recently held a meeting in Kinshasa to argue for the reorienting of food production around agroecology in the Congo Basin.

Civil society groups, donors, government representatives and small-scale farmers gathered to exchange views on challenges and solutions to food security.

Our farm is pretty isolated and we don't get many visitors. When we do, I always feel a fresh sense of inspiration and motivation to keep doing what we do.

Farm tours allow us to explain the philosophies that guide us while showing what they look like in action. It's an opportunity to talk about the evolution of systems and our hope for the future. Seeing other people's appreciation for and interest in what we do is incredibly validating.

“As extreme weather bakes their soil, young farmers are helping one another to embrace new techniques, lower emissions and (they hope) still earn a living” … but we are being sabotaged at every turn through elite capture to agrifood institutions and precarious and debt-intensive access to land, capital, and infrastructure.

Great privilege to visit the Centre for in earlier this week, and learn about all its great work over the last few decades, from first start-up to today’s real commitment to providing for students as well as employment and education work with local schools. Also really good discussion around in the context of AgroEcology. Thank you!

I've been quiet for a few days because I am currently in Colombia. When I asked what I should purchase to bring home, I got a list of fruit seeds. 😆 Now I have to go and hunt down certain exotic fruits to eat!

Rollinia, fresh acai fruit, yellow dragon fruit, gooseberry, and others...

Oh, the joys of partnering up with a diversity obsessed agroecologist farmer. 😂😂

Michael continues to make amazing headway on our slope, getting more cacao plants in the ground every day - along with banana, plantain, and a whole slew of other trees. Nowadays he's often accompanied by our toucan babies (they're actually collared aracari). They roam freely around the property, constantly surprising us in new and unexpected places.

That's an excellent question!

The claim is both correct, but, in a short-sighted context, &, incorrect in a long-term sustainable context.

The claim is short-sighted because fossil fuels (synthetic fertilisers) are going to eventually run out anyway (& cause pollution)

Therefore, the long-term approach is to develop ecologically-based farming methods that do not require synthetic fertilisers (or insecticides)

Sometimes the FAO does useful stuff:

The Global Soil Doctors Programme is a farmer-to-farmer training initiative that aims to build the capacity of farmers on sustainable soil management while supporting national governments and stakeholders in addressing the needs of their rural communities. This online platform provides support for farmers, policy makers, development planners, agricultural extension workers, NGOs, private sectors and any other practitioner/stakeholder interested in transmitting the importance of soil as a vital resource.

We pulled in the rest of the corn harvest a little too late. The guacamayas have been hitting it hard.

The fact that these majestic birds pass through our property is wonderful... Most everything we do revolves around creating habitat and growing food within the natural systems we are part of in our local environment.

But still. 😔

Lessons learned, I suppose. When the big parrots show up the corn is ripe.

Not a banana, not a plantain - these are topochos (at least that's what they're called in Venezuela).

So what do we do with a glut of ripe topochos? Dry them down, of course. Dehydrating fruit is one of the best ways to preserve flavor and nutritional value. Plus, they taste divine. I actually enjoy eating them dried down more than fresh off the plant!

The phrase "It's complicated" is used by industry lobbyists to intentionally try & disinform people. To complicate matters further, "it's complicated" can also mean that the system that scientists are studying is, well, complex.

But, it's not that complicated to understand that locally grown vegetables & fruits, especially when those veggies & fruits are grown using the methods of , are a way to produce . But, avocados half way around the planet isn't.

While I endorse totally being more sustainable agricultural practices a key part of the puzzle on how to solve the multiple crisis we are facing, I am one of the serious looking guys that always call for caution with the hyperbolic claims.

Many people in the community grossly exagerate its potential to attract funding and popularity.
It could be argued that this is ok, since RegAg is definitely an improvement compared to what we have now, but there are several biophysical limitations that will not allow RegAg alone to save the world.

a) in order to apply large amounts of compost, first you need to produce a lot of biomass.
b) Soil Organic Matter (SOM) is not a stable thing. It degrades progressi ely after some decades (yes, there are claims that "with RegAg-technique X SOM gets stabilized", but they didn't study this in long-term experiments)
c) in agriculture, there is no one-size-fits-all. E.g. if you wonder why in warmer, drier climates there is little SOM, it might be for some reason and not only because of bad agricultural practices.
d) Regenerative Agriculture needs to strengthen the focus on social and economic issues. Team up with the movement, as only an will give farmers the structure to achieve while caring the planet.

So, promote Regenerative Agriculture, but be careful with the claims, as it won't help if in some years people will identify us as liars having promised too much.

Sorry for being boring 🤓
