Benedikt Bösel is a farmer who plants trees in his fields. He is experimenting with agroforestry, which combines crops and trees to improve soil health and water retention1. This could help him cope with drought, protect biodiversity, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

6/6 I am sorry to end on a sad note (this is meant to be an to !), but: the is full of the most wonderful examples of , enhancing systems,. It is just so sad that all this is now at the forefront of the . As @bomengidsnl just pointed out: Many tree species may be drought resistant, but they are not climate change resistant. I so hope all these trees survive what is to come

Another great example of , positive, symbiotic relations between plants, animals, humans that have evolved over time. Found this article really informative but am not an expert on this at all - if anyone knows more, please do add!

4/x The reason are so drought resilient is that they are, of course, indigenous to the where holm oaks are integral to various systems, such as the system in . Here, holm oak trees "have been selected over centuries for the production of sweet acorns as a high quality feed; planted deliberately or self-seeded. Below the tree layer is a grass layer used for grazing, or occasionally cultivated cereals "

PERMACULTURE IDEAS FOR THE ANTHROPOCENE…
Could there ever be such a thing as bioregional agroforestry—a tree cropping systems producing food and useful materials that also has space for indigenous plant species and that is
adapted to regional climate and terrain?

Peter Hardwick thought so. I came across Peter’s idea while on a course at Robin Francis’ Djanbung Gardens permaculture education centre in Nimbin some years ago.

This is a brief introduction to Peter’s idea as it stood at the time. Let’s know what you think of his model and how you would adapt it to the region you call home.

Fruitfulness.

The broken and dismembered remains of a spider's silken birthing sack decorate the fruiting head of a saskatoon berry bush today in a fruit cage in my back yard.

The spiderlets may have gone, but their fruiting is as much of a tangible reality as the maturing fruits of the bush.

A thick-legged flower beetle visited this chamomile flower today in my back yard.

For some reason (and I often ask myself as I sort the tangled morass out ...) I grow a profusion of system plants and wild flowers insite my fruit cage, with all the soft fruit. The fruit bushes and insects don't seem to mind.

Likewise the diversity of interest brings all manner of different pollinators along to the spread ...

This close-up of a honey bee visiting a chamomile flower shows why, in contrast to a feverfew flower, it is so much more attractive to pollinators: the yellow center of the flower is itself made of many dozens of little florets (tiny self-contained flowers), each containing a small pool of nectar as a reward for the insect.

Photograph taken in my back yard. Other than selective enlargement and framing, no modifications made.

A long cool drink of nectar on a warm summer's day.

This meadow brown butterfly, visiting the pale lilac flower of a lucerne (alfalfa) plant in my back yard, shows that it is beautifully adapted to its environment. Its proboscis is plentifully long enough to reach down all the way to access the sweet nectar resources hidden within the flower.

One at a time, please.

A queueing system seems to be in force for visiting rights to this mallow flower.

When there is a diversity of flowering plants, and an ecosystem to support it sustainably without resorting to damaging artificial sprays, then a profusion of eager pollinators is the result.

I consider myself very fortunate that not only chamomile, but also feverfew, has found a home in my back yard.

This is a clump of what almost appear to be small, frilly edged fried eggs sitting atop green stalks and foliage.

Lucerne (Alfalfa) flowers, flourishing in my back yard.

An excellent bee plant, mineral accumulator and nitrogen fixer, it confers the additional benefits of improving the soil structure and sheltering lower growing plants.

Personally I am attracted to the composition of this photograph as it contrasts the pale lilac flowers against a diffuse green and white background.
