Not everyone might take part in these things but honestly, and not meaning hyperbole, I'd revoke the scientific credential of anyone alleging such protests are inappropriate. We're not even talking property damage or lost revenue here, just holding up a sign. The people advocating sanctions for anyone just holding up a sign about climate are the ones deserving sanction.

You have to be in SERIOUS denial to see such protest actions as anything but well-informed acts of conscience. Denial is not at this point consistent with proper understanding of science. What point is there in a professional organization that cannot make such simple distinctions competently?

I wasn’t there, but I have personal experience being silenced by #AGU for political speech.

@ultracricket @climatebrad if I see an Exxon, Chevron or other fossil fuel corporate branding at next #AGU, I’m throwing soup. Political speech can not be a matter of pay to play in the #AGU.

Sending all my support as a fellow scientist and whole person. Timid or captured admins thought they could silence you but platformed you instead.

As an #AGU member, I’m planning to go in person next year and escalate peaceful political speech, in solidarity with your brave and principled action.

I had an e-mail from #AGU president Randy W. Fiser this evening.

Very disappointing, their "Ethics". I will terminate my membership.

In November 2021, the American Geophysical Union announced its decision to divest from fossil-fuel companies in a video labeled only “AGU announces change in its investment strategy," without any transcript.

AGU managed to avoid any press by rolling out its decision this way, until now.
