#DH2023 in Graz was such a wonderful celebration of Digital Humanities worldwide. It was great to attend this major DH event in-person and present a poster on my research with legacy catalogue data funded by #AHRC and #RLUK. You can view the poster and associated data here: https://bl.iro.bl.uk/collections/a0a057dd-bd00-414a-ba2c-9fe61ee6fba0?locale=en

I've been called for jury service and I'm struggling to see how this affects my PhD and funding dates; it looks like basically I just need to absorb it within the time I have left. Do any UK PhD students or supervisors (especially AHRC / UKRI) have any experience of this?

This week I begin 4 months of examining the as-yet-un-researched #blankbooks of @TheHuntington, thanks to the @ahrcpress International Placement Scheme (IPS). Excited doesn't to cover it! #research #phd #AHRC #blankbookbinding #bookhistory

Moving from 2D to the challenge of 3D digital capture, two gorgeous images from #ahrc-funded Tracing the Past project led by #UniversityofLiverpool. The project uses laser scanning and other modern techniques to understand the materials and techniques used in the design and construction of major religious buildings.
The first image is of the roof of St Stephen's Chapel, Westminster, the second of Tewkesbury Abbey, both copyright Nicholas Webb.
Special thanks to Nicky Garland.
Late afternoon treat from the Special Collections of @durham_uni@instinctd.com, continuing our recent run of #MarginalDoodles: a manuscript codex containing works by a distinctly apprehensive-looking Thomas Hoccleve, written in his own hand between 1421 and 1426, intended as a presentation copy for Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmorland.
Special thanks to Judy Burg.

As the festive season draws to a close, a series of doodles by someone who was clearly less than enamoured at the prospect of Greek Grammar. The book is Richard Franklin’s ‘Orthotonia...’, 1673 and comes courtesy of Sarah Huws at Cardiff University Special Collections.

For tired revellers? A page from The herball, or, Generall historie of plantes / gathered by Iohn Gerarde of London Master in Chirurgerie, 1636 (Spec Coll Over.X RS164 GER). It contains thousands of herbal remedies and images of the plants used for treating illness and injury and features in exhibition ‘Plants and Prayer: health and healing before 1700’.

I will add, I'm disappointed in some of the language and meanings used in this report, particularly in relation to "value". I think Rupert Read (cited) would agree with me! I've also written a specific critique of the vacuous phrase "green space." Ironically, the report actually highlights language as a point of issue. #Kew #PlantHumanities #AHRC
