Read an interesting article this morning on #TechBrew about the US's approach to #AI #compliance in light of the EU's new #AILaw. Apparently, the #US is currently taking a #voluntary approach to #AIGovernance rather than putting #bipartisan legislation in place to enforce #guardrails to protect us from ourselves. I hope this is a temporary position, simply because of our #SplitCongress, and not because they haven't thought of it. 🤞 I know the #AIOverlords have been put on notice, but no formal laws in place yet here. I like the perspective of the EU AI Law, just needs some fine tuning. Other developed nations should follow suit sooner than later IMHO. What are your thoughts?

#AI #AIGovernance: "Promoting the benefits of innovative technologies requires addressing potential societal disruptions and ensuring public safety and security. The rapid deployment of generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications underscores the urgency of establishing robust governance mechanisms for effective ethical and legal oversight. This concept note proposes the immediate creation of a global AI observatory supported by cooperative consultative mechanisms to identify and disseminate best practices, standards, and tools for the comprehensive international governance of AI systems."https://www.carnegiecouncil.org/media/article/a-framework-for-the-international-governance-of-ai

#AI #GenerativeAI #OpenAI #LLMs #Chatbots #AIGovernance #AIEthics: "OpenAI has said that “Our alignment research aims to make artificial general intelligence (AGI) aligned with human values and follow human intent.” Yet many of the world’s ills are the result of the difference between stated human values and the intent expressed by actual human choices and actions. Justice, fairness, equity, respect for truth, and long-term thinking are all in short supply. An AI model such as GPT4 has been trained on a vast corpus of human speech, a record of humanity’s thoughts and feelings. It is a mirror. The biases that we see there are our own. We need to look deeply into that mirror, and if we don’t like what we see, we need to change ourselves, not just adjust the mirror so it shows us a more pleasing picture!
To be sure, we don’t want AI models to be spouting hatred and misinformation, but simply fixing the output is insufficient. We have to reconsider the input—both in the training data and in the prompting. The quest for effective AI governance is an opportunity to interrogate our values and to remake our society in line with the values we choose. The design of an AI that will not destroy us may be the very thing that saves us in the end."

Went to a panel at IAS today on "Steering AI for the Public Good". When I got out, the air was full of smoke and the sun was blood red. Did the panelists anger Roko's basilisk (Fortunately, this panel was totally free of any discussion of s-risk.)
Panelsits were: Alondra Nelson, Miranda Bogen, @brianchristian, @sorelle, and @wsisaac.

#AI #AIGovernance #AIEthics #LLMs #GenerativeAI: "In tech, Facebook’s Oversight Board is one working attempt at balancing transparency with accountability. The Board members are an interdisciplinary global group, and their judgments, such as overturning a decision made by Facebook to remove a post that depicted sexual harassment in India, are binding. This model isn’t perfect either; there are accusations of corporate capture, as the board is funded solely by Meta, can only hear cases that Facebook itself refers, and is limited to content takedowns, rather than addressing more systemic issues such as algorithms or moderation policies.
However flawed, both of these examples provide a starting point for what an AI global governance body might look like. An organization like this should be a consolidated ongoing effort with expert advisory and collaborations, like the IAEA, rather than a secondary project for people with other full-time jobs. Like the Facebook Oversight Board, it should receive advisory input and guidance from industry, but have the capacity to make independent binding decisions that companies must comply with."

Beyond simply defending public institutions and goods from a current AI model release, there is also the potential to use current systems to increase the resilience of our critical institutions and public goods from future releases.

Unfortunately, there are currently few incentives to do red teaming or violet teaming, let alone slow down AI releases enough to have sufficient time for this work. For that we would need governments to act, ideally internationally. In lieu of such action, I have been helping companies initiate independent governance processes at a national or even global scale to make critical decisions, like “what kinds of testing and guardrails are necessary for model release?” more democratically."
