Unsolicited opinion: I'm reasonably convinced that the single biggest difference between current "AI"/ML techniques and actual brains is that ML techniques have the creator pick a model size out of a hat (including things like number of hidden layers), whereas biological processes use simple flocking-style rules that compete with each other to expand and contract the network on demand, at the exact places where extra precision is needed or wasteful. The biological network is shaped by some bottom-up process with competing, sometimes contradictory “goals”, and that process is almost certainly recursive because that's the only way to do bottom-up information processing in a system whose size and connections are dynamic.

In general, the bottom of a complex system is where the information is stored, and the top of the system only contains a summary. Top-down approaches are always doomed to be more limited than bottom-up. Each top-down choice is a restriction that makes the system less responsive / "intelligent", with the tradeoff of making the system easier to explain / comprehend / predict.

(The latter paragraph was not written with the intention of critiquing Stalinism, Maoism, or capitalist corporations of the kind found in Silicon Valley. E pur si muove.)

How AI is Eating the Software World

“Our discussions around Generative AI are focused on the wrong thing, and it’s causing us to miss what’s about to happen. We’re infatuated with what it can do, like getting better search results, creating custom art, or becoming an interactive teacher. It’s all really exciting, but it’s distracting us from the advancement that makes it all possible.”

Just watched @tomscott's AI video. I agree. I think it feels like we are on the way up the curve: the model is going to be improved until it generates good-enough things for the general public and then we are in trouble. youtu.be/jPhJbKBuNnA

The first 5 mins or so of this with Satya Nadella is worth listening to if you work in tech., and aspire to do work with a purpose. Let’s hope the current wave of AI/ML tech. really does boost the productivity, and opportunity for millions or billions and doesn’t just drown us all in more convincing spam and disinformation.

I’m have no doubt the rest of the talk is good as well and that GPT4 + Bing will raise the bar for the internet search experience. I just thought that first 5 mins captures the greater opportunity ahead really well.
