Across from the display were two pieces that were Ryukyuan: A post-war Bingata Ryusou and an art piece of a Ryukyuan dancer. However, instead of the labels giving space to Ryukyuan culture or identity, they were both labeled Japanese. It was incredibly frustrating to see this, there are too many items in museums and institutions that are viewed as "just Japanese".

Picked up these three #TaiyoBessatsu 太陽別冊 #zukan 図鑑 books on #Ainu and #Ryukyu cultures. They may not be the same as a dense scholarly publication, but I'm glad for the beautiful pictures, and content touching upon a wide range of aspects of the history and culture. #books #materialculture

Info: Hysteria; Reflect, and Instinct by Ernst Kretschmer, 1971 English translation version.
Mostly read for Kretschmer’s take on Uchimura Yushi et al’s study on imu, the supposed “malady of the Ainu” (Uchimura, 1935).
Really interesting to see how Kretschmer seems to ‘mold’ the phenomena of imu into his own epistemology of hysteria, in many ways negating Uchimura’s hypothesis as a form of mimicry based on in-born suggestibility (Uchimura et al, 1938, pp. 47-). #japan #hysteria #ainu
