Hinton: The research will happen in China if it doesn't happen here. Because there's so many benefits of these things. Such huge increases in productivity.

One unsurprising part of the #AIPause discourse (given the people behind it) is the relative lack emphasis on law. Yes, Congress is dysfunctional. But it would not be particularly complicated to pass a bill that barred the deployment of LLMs and empowered the FTC to handle enforcement. And unlike some adjacent contexts, I don’t think the 1A is a huge barrier here. It’s worth considering that an intended goal of doomerism is to make regulation seem too hard.
