My spouse worked for a short-term rental company, an #AirBNB competitor, and wow did I hear an earful from them about the kinds of chaos these places can cause. One factor driving away the individual homeowner posting their extra 'crash space' online vs. the massive conglomerates is how little help the companies offer when something goes wrong (i.e. a renter sets off fireworks in your house while you're renting it out). Giant property owners can eat those kinds of losses and don't have sentimental attachment to their homes.

Wow, #NYC pretty much bans short-term rentals (i.e. #airbnb). We need something like that in #Vancouver as well. It must be more beneficial to rent out to long-term renters than making more money from short-term visitors.

So let me get this straight. I own a dwelling. I pay property taxes, insurance all sorts of fees. I decide that I want to put MY property on #AirBnB the city has me charge a “bedroom tax”, now they also want me to register my property and pay a registration fee. Also, I’m only limited to putting a property on AirBnB if it’s my primary dwelling.
So I’m not allowed to do with my property what I want because the government doesn’t know how to spend money responsibly

I hope this provides a template for other cities. Downtown and near downtown Boise are overrun with short-term rentals on #AirBnb and other sites. Has decreased the stock of low-cost rentals for local workers dramatically.
