"Experts say there’s a balance to strike in the academic world when using generative AI—it could make the writing process more efficient & help researchers more clearly convey their findings. But the tech ... has also dropped fake references into its responses, made things up, and reiterated sexist and racist content from the internet, all of which would be problematic if included in published scientific writing."

"If you use a chatbot to create or revise text, know the caveats and risks. Ask yourself why you are using a tool that isn’t validated: you’d (hopefully) not do that in another part of your research process."

I might not currently be a scriptwriter (FYI, I wrote an entire feature film script for my final Master's project), but regardless of the kind of writing I'm doing, I can get behind much of the sentiment David Simon (The Wire) has towards using generative AI in creative writing. As he explained in this recent interview with NPR.
Duet AI offers a convenient and efficient way to draft emails and plan events, but it's lacking in accuracy and style. #AIwriting #GoogleDuet #ProductivityApps #InaccurateInformation #StuffyStyle http://www.techmeme.com/230521/p6#a230521p6

So #ai can write code, and it can write prose, and it can create designs and artwork.
Many of us are scribes at the moment the printing press was invented.
Now is a good time to learn how to use the “printing press”.
Do your thing faster and better.
Do new things which you couldn’t do before.

#TurnItIn is rolling out a detector for AI writing, but many universities aren't ready to use it.
“We’ve had no opportunity to test it, so we simply don’t know about what it does and doesn’t do.” - Deborah Green, UCISA
“It’s a black box. We’ve got no idea what those results mean and we aren’t able to have a look at how the software came to those conclusions.” - Charles Knight, Advance HE

"Can or should authors use ChatGPT or other AI tools in the development and writing of their own research writing? Can it be used for conducting a literature review? What about analyzing results? Or maybe for drafting an abstract from an existing article?"

Will the writing part of our jobs be replaced by AI? Good news: it probably won’t. Bad news: it probably won’t.
As long as we engage our minds, the writing we start and finish is still needed, and still difficult to do well.
Well that’s what I think right now. Reasons here: https://www.dothewords.com/robots-juggle-but-humans-should-think/
Do you agree, or think I’m being too naive about AI and its risks?

I wrote a long thing on AI writing and human writing that resembles AI. Where some tedious data manipulation tasks can be easier, where data narration could be automated in the future, and where some kind of human thinking is really needed. I'd be interested to hear whether some, all, or none of this resonates with people who take work writing seriously.

Today, I'm wondering two things:
1. Will I still have a job in 10 years.
2. If the Society of Authors is pressuring the UK Copyright Office to take the stance of not awarding copyright to wholly AI derived writing and art? Or pressuring for changes in the law? (After the AI images situation that happened with the US Copyright Office, I was just wondering if anything like this is happening in the UK.)
Now ChatGPT is being (mis)used to do #PeerReview:
"A reviewer rejected my paper, and instead suggested me to familiarize myself with the following readings. I could not find them anywhere. After a control in GPT-2, my fears where confirmed. Those sources where 99% fake...generated by AI." - Robin Bauwens

They just happen to follow the same rhyming scheme. So, it's just an English sonnet with a poor approximation of Shakespearean language, using an English sonnet's expected structure but none of the stuff that when you point it out gets you a good grade when you study and analyse Shakespeare at school.
(I'll admit, I've mainly seen these style of posts on LinkedIn.)
"Here's X thing in the style of a Shakespearean sonnet, written by ChatGPT!" type posts are really starting to make me grind my teeth. Because they're not remarkable. Why?
They're not really in the style of a Shakespearean sonnet, when you think about it. There's no metaphor, for a start. They are usually a very literal poem where Shakespeare rarely was.
