Yes, it will run on a VPS, and there are companies who will do that for you. Mastodon itself can be resource intensive but there are less demanding alternatives such as @firefish and #pleroma or #akkoma

Extra-features (disabled by default) is somewhat confusing in #Fedilab.
This option allows to enable features that #Mastodon doesn't support (quotes, reactions, submit messages in a specific format, etc.)
But softwares like #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #GlitchSocial, #FireFish don't support (currently) same features.

We plan to use #NodeInfo to automatically enable features depending on the user's instance (ie: software).

And! Its a new server refresh in anticipation of the upcoming #Synthtember recording festivities here at the Tryptophonic Workshop. Back to #Mastodon on account of my previous #Akkoma install going all wibbly-wobbly & the fact that I'm keen to be able to reliably upload audio tracks. We'll see how long it takes me to look at the Masto cache disk usage on my VPS & grumpily move to an alternative #activitypub server. Hopefully I can maintain server equilibrium until at least #Noisevember.

I have (and I guess it's now 'had') an account on an #Akkoma server. I hadn't been there in a while, but it now appears to be dead.

I didn't have a lot "invested" there, but it's sad to see it go.

Thanks go to my main instance, ruby.social, for what is now years of service. I say this after making many unsuccessful attempts at my own #Mastodon installs. It's not easy. Nothing on an Internet-facing server is.

@leighms #Mastodon 4.2 will greatly improve search ability. At the moment, #Firefish and #Friendica search system is much more advanced (but also #Pleroma, #Akkoma, etc. have very good search ability).

#akkoma (pleroma fork) is I think my favorite fediverse server i've installed so far but I've only had it for about half an hour

@Shadow_KID01 The Fediverse is much bigger than Mastodon. You can check out #Firefish #Akkoma and if you like Reddit styled platforms then #Kbin #Lemmy are awesome. #Pixelfed is a great Instagram alternative. If you stick with Mastodon, choosing a good client can make your experience significantly better.
