“…the novel’s fizzing exuberance derives from the fun of watching Gray’s keen authorial intelligence finding layer upon layer of unexpected possibility in his one ingenious narrative conceit.”

Yorgos Lanthimos’s adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel POOR THINGS (1992) has won the Golden Lion at the 2023 La Biennale di Venezia. In a series of recordings made in the last year of his life, Gray talks about the novel & reads extracts – & discusses works which influenced him, from Thomas Love Peacock’s NIGHTMARE ABBEY (1818) to Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974)

“The entire book is based round contradictions and options. Christ, Gray even creates his own nemesis to negate everything he says. Who is correct about the manuscripts, Alasdair Gray or Michael Donnelly? Who is telling the truth, Bella Baxter or Archibald McCandless? We will never know. We don’t know anything in this book.”

Now to return to Agnes Owens and a reread of A Working Mother. I loved Betty’s story & she will form the focus of my formulation for the novella. Lots of interesting themes such as trauma, alcohol use & the impact of war on returning soldiers & their families to consider
I read this at the start of the year & it’ll be my first reread of her work so I can work up character profiles for Agnes’ complete work. Really looking forward to shaping up this larger project with The #AlasdairGray Archive 📚

I read Poor Things by Alasdair Gray with my bookclub. I'm not a fun of surreal stories but I did enjoy it, and I'm very curious to watch the movie! Has anyone else read it? @bookstodon #PoorThings #AlasdairGray
Found this (slightly battle-worn) foreign edition in the office that would seem to suggest that the German for "1982 Janine" is "Janine 1982".

“Only the rich & illiterate can ignore our anthology. With this in their lavatory everyone else can read nothing but newspaper supplements & still seem educated.”

INTERVIEWER: When somebody asks you to describe your book LANARK, what do you say to them?
ALASDAIR GRAY: I say it is a Scottish petit bourgeois model of the universe.
I: Just like that?
AG: Yes, I’ve rehearsed it and honed it down to as few words as possible.

I attempted to post an advert on Facebook/Instagram for the Gray Day event that is happening this Saturday, but the ad has been rejected, because it included this extremely salacious image.
If you’re in #Glasgow this Saturday evening and would like to see a celebration of #AlasdairGray, with readings and live music, and if you are not utterly scandalised by this illustration of a woman’s breasts, then tickets are available here: https://www.grayday.info/2023
When we asked #AlasdairGray for a caption quote for an #IainClark exhibition, he said ‘it is quite simply the best portrait of me as a working artist that anyone had ever done.’ (Pic with permission) #Scotland #Culture #writing #art #photography #ThrowbackThursday #iainclarkartnet

Alasdair Gray’s mural in the Òran Mór, Glasgow.
The ceiling is divided into twelve parts, so Gray based his artwork in part on the zodiac (referring to a Ladybird guide for children to map his constellations).
Some of the text on the walls/ceiling:
“Where are we from?” "Life Is Rooted in Death’s Republic"
“What are we?” “Animals Who Want More Than We Need”
“Where are we going?" “Our Seed Returns to Death’s Republic".
Elsewhere appears “Let us flourish by telling the truth” and a phrase Gray often returns to: “Work as if you are living in the early days of a better nation.”
Photos by Mark Wild (first two) and Kat Gollock (third).
