George Dilboy was born in 1896 in the Greek town of (Tr: Alaçatı) near , (now ). He and his family immigrated to the USA in 1908. He died in battle during WW1 and became the first Greek-American to be awarded America's highest decoration for valor. In 1922 when the Kemalist Army occupied Alatsata, Turkish soldiers broke open Dilboy's coffin and desecrated his remains and the US flag, enraging U.S President Warren G. Harding.
