We take time to count the number of bats exiting roosts. Keeping track of numbers over years will help us monitor what is happening with populations. In the west, there are few known hibernation sites. When white-nose syndrome hits, the only indicator will be a drop in numbers at summer roosts. Using thermal imaging is one way of following exiting bats (and it looks cool too)!

More info on the white-nose syndrome spread in Alberta. Here is the updated map from CWHC showing new Pd cases in AB & Saskatchewan, along the Red Deer & South Saskatchewan Rivers.
Made possible with the assistance and support of AB Env and Parks, Sask MOE, NWT Gov, ECCC and others.
This map only shows confirmed locations. The spread may be more extensive than shown. WCS Canada's Bat Program will continue to monitor & sample to confirm & track spread.

Major changes are happening to the protection of in . In case you missed it, all bats in the province are now finally protected under the Wildlife Act—we no longer have non-license bat species. Killing any bat in AB is now illegal without a permit (other actions under "hunting& related activities" are likewise prohibited). Northern & Little Brown Myotis have also moved to the list of Endangered Animals under the Alberta Wildlife Act Regulations.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet! (Shakespeare). But what's in a name?

Happy !
How loud are bats? VERY! But thankfully, for humans, we can't hear their high frequency echolocation calls! Here is a short reel if you want to learn more.
