I wasn't going to do another Jazz album this week but I so enjoyed listening to this one from the incredible trumpet player Chet Baker.

is Bangles "All Over the Place". 'Place'd between their paisley underground past and their stardom future, the band benefits from hook-filled songwriting and rsharp production (without the bloated production of especially "Everything"). Hoffs leads on country-fied "James", the savage put down "Hero Takes a Fall, and beautiful "Dover Beach". Debby Peterson leads on (among others) the stellar cover of "Goin Down to Liverpool". just a great pop LP, and worth having.

Jim Hall – Concierto from 1975.

A bit of a departure from my past posts using the Album Of The Week Tag.

This one comes from the excellent guitar player Jim Hall, and if you don't like jazz I urge you to at least skip to 18:45 and listen to Concierto De Aranjuez for which the album is named.

is Holly Beth Vincent's first solo LP named after her ditched "Italians" band. Produced by Mike "Wire" Thorne, this is one of the most unfairly unappreciated rock albums, at least of the . Violin & broken-hearted lyrics abound, probably concerning band break up with "Romeo" . She can't escape the "Cool Love" spreading; fights back against madness "Dangerously" lurking; and wants "Revenge". Yet wants love, even if an "Unoriginal Sin". Beauty.

It contains the unbelievable excellent tracks 4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy) and New York City Serenade, not forgetting the other 5 tracks,

is a psych-nova classic from a icon . Simply entitled "Gal" it really expanded the grittier of rock elements of into her music. "Cinema Olympia" is starts us off (with a killer chorus). "Tuareg" veers us further out; we get back to pretty pop on "Meu Nome E Gal" but "Como Medo, Com Pedro" has Gal starting to raise her voice and fuzz guitar. "Objeto Sim, Objeto Nao" brings the wah wah and other experiments. A real delightful trip.

is the initial album by Julian Cope "World Shut Your Mouth". Led by "Bandy's First Jump", Julian shows he won't just do the neo-psychedelia of Teardrop Explodes. He rescues "Metranil Vavin" and the drunken "Pussyface" from his old band. Balladry appears with "Head Hang Low". Epics like "Kolly Kibber's Birthday" and "Greatness and Perfection of Love" also show his ability to convey passion in his vocals. Remember there's nothing wrong with being a cow anyway"

is a sleeper great . "Pauline Murray" got together with "The Invisible Girls" to issue a glorious one-off. Murray doesnt have a "good" voice but she gives it her all, and writes a killer chorus/melody. "Shoot You Down", "Sympathy" and (amazing) "Dream Sequence" sound like some bizarre planet where an alien is singing English-language karaoke backed by a group of misfit humans. The mood is bright other than the occasional darker moment like "Mr. X".

Quadrophenia - The Who

I am going to be controversial here and say this is the best studio album The Who recorded. Better than Tommy. It is built on the experience of Tommy, but moved to the more "rockier" side of The Who than, IMHO, the "poppy" sounding Tommy.

It also had an amazing cover, and booklet.

is a 1979 great. While it maintains some of the herky jerky weirdness of "Go 2" ("Helicopter", "Outside World", "Scissor Man"), "Drums & Wires" moves towards craftsmanship. Acoustic guitars ("Ten Feet Tall") and trumpets ("That Is the Way" [a sleeper]) along with second guitarist Dave Gregory, expand the sound. Other than the (bad) closer, this album is "girdle"d with hit after hit, starting with opener single "Making Plans for Nigel". Really reel.

was the first great album by . Lacking the humor and humility of some of the 90s albums, "War" is still a stellar rock LP. Think of the hits: "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "New Year's Day" and "Two Hearts Beat as One" (very underrated). The album features some awkward moments like "Refugee" but even those contain some signs of greatness". "Surrender" and "'40'" remain to me 2 of their finest album tracks. The production is crisp and loud, the melodies invigorating.

The Jam - Sound Affects

Sound Affects is the fifth studio album by English rock band The Jam. The album was released on 28 November 1980. The cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various Sound Effects records produced by the BBC during the 1970s. Jam frontman Paul Weller has opined Sound Affects to be the Jam's best album. News of reissuing on and in theaters "Stop Making Sense" made me think of my favorite album by them. "Fear of Music" is the . "Remain in Light" precursor "I Zimbra leads off, David Byrne then goes weird. Singing about and fearful about a "Mind", "Cities", "Electric Guitar" and "Animals" ('shit oooooon the ground!!'). That vision leads to beautiful moments like ending of "Memories can't wait", the pure pop of "Air" ( :ablobcatheart: ) and of course "Heaven"
