Substance #addiction and #alcoholism are serious conditions and I have great sympathy for those who suffer and great admiration for those who get help. But that also doesn’t mean one can use alcoholism as an excuse for one’s actions. One has to deal with the fallout. One change we badly need, at least in the UK, is to see #alcoholism as a medical problem, rather than a moral failing. Some people (as I did) can drink too regularly when they're young, but get away with it, and be fine in later life; others fall into the pit and can never climb out. As long as alcoholism is seen as shameful, people will be discouraged from seeking support, and lives will be ruined unnecessarily.
