Does anybody know where #ALCS money actually comes from? I get, in principle, that it's from photocopying/scanning/etc. of books but I'm wondering what specific event(s) prompt them to pay me. My last statement was way higher than I'd have expected.*

If you're a UK academic, and haven't yet signed up to #ALCS, just do it. And list your recent publications.

They're a non-profit who claim author royalty fees on your behalf for when people use or photocopy your papers. I expected nothings, but it surprisingly adds up to a decent chunk of change!

If you have any books, articles, fiction, essays or journalistic works published in print in the UK, don't forget to either create or update your works list before the 11th of February to have them included in your next ALCS disbursement payment.

A 30% withholding tax and exemptions are labyrinthine, but it's still money, right?

If you've not done it before, the one-time membership fee is taken from your disbursements, not charged to you.

Publications need an SSIN or ISBN to qualify.

DM if you want to discuss the implications of work-for-hire on copyright (NB I will be sweary about this).

The payment turns up in March and is a nice little extra bonus in thin times for most people who get any of their income from writing.

The report does include self-publishing (21% of professional authors had self published in the previous year.) I am not sure it is the best survey ever on self-publishing incomes.
