Excellent paper describing the initial and subsequent detections of #Vespa #mandarinia (a.k.a. #Asian #giant #hornet or #murder #hornet).
A fact I wasn't aware of: researchers and pest managers used #radio-tagged, live-captured hornets to lead them back to #nests (usually found in #red #alder cavities).
Tons of other valuable information in the paper as well.

With help from the #nonprofit Trout Unlimited, Wilson won a $1.2 million BPA grant to restore his three-quarter mile stretch of river.
In the summer of 2022, crews placed 475 trees, many complete with massive root wads, in the channel to slow water down and spread it out. They built 54 artificial #beaver dams to hold water in the floodplain and create lots of little stillwater pools. And they planted #cottonwood, #willow and #alder trees for shade.”

We have been here 6 years and planted all the #trees you can see. The #willow is 4 years old, the #alder in the foreground has been in for 2. As this thickens into a copse it will further #SlowTheFlow but that takes years. It should always be resistant to seasonal flooding, but whether it is enough for #ClimateChange is anyone’s guess. 😔

Flooded! #SlowTheFlow the Fernie Burn has burst its banks. We can hold this water on the #Smallholding and it means a slower flow down to the houses in Cupar. We are planting #trees such as #alder and #willow in time they will help to keep the water here longer and so improve the flow downstream.

A generation ago, these woods were logged. The forest has regrown since, but every once in a while I find an old logging road like this in the middle of nowhere.
Alder trees help me find these roads; they are quick to re-grow after logging. I’ve learned to investigate when I see a certain pattern of alder tree growth in the distance.
