This weekend i played War Chest. A abstract, strategic, asymmetric 2 or 4 player boardgame. You do have to learn the mechanics of the different troops, but this takes 1 or 2 games. It's very straight forward, elegant, players have important choices, ruses and deduction.

It's from Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson (both known for the "Undaunted" - Games), published by Alderac Entertainment.
