Does anybody have experience growing as a strategy to improve soil health?

I was thinking of starting a few small-ish patches in under-used areas of my yard, in hopes it would make them more hospitable to growing a bit of a food forest in future years.

Saudi Arabia bans industrial scale farming of alfalfa, to protect its limited water supplies.

So they grow it in a desert and ship it back home, using AZ’s scarce water.

Perspective: The prior republican admin even blocked efforts to track the amount of water being used. get saudi the fuck out.

The Salt Lake Tribune - Letter: Discussions of water conservation must include the dairy industry

There are so many problems with this letter.

First off, what business does someone from Berkeley, CA have telling Utah what's up? It's silly for a Utah paper to choose to publish out-of-state letters to the editor. They don't appear to have any particular qualifications to speak on the matter either.

Second, a shift to factory-grown alfalfa would drastically reduce water consumption, as much as 99% (no joke). You don't have to ditch alfalfa entirely to save water, just use better methods. This is probably going to cause the alfalfa export industry in Utah to crater within a decade. After all, why not grow it where it's needed?

Third, the water quality issues that may result from dairy farms can be solved in many ways other than reducing production. The "waste" actually has monetary value as fertilizer or even bioplastics. Reaching out to dairy operations to let them know they're leaving money on the table would be a great way to ensure it doesn't end up leaching into the environment.
