#AlgernonBlackwood from a women’s magazine in 1909; and a straight-up #ScoobyDoo story 60 years later, when adults fretted that a ghost-hunting talking dog was too intense for small children, back it wasn’t, and when people still considered such things.
#Wiktionary says archaic meaning of “lay” is “cause to subside”. It’s not a #SigourneyWeaver / #PatrickSwayze kind of thing. Get your mind out of the gutter.
