Today in 1893, Algonquin Provincial Park is established. It is the oldest provincial park in Canada and today measures 7,653 sq. km.
It features 2,400 lakes & 1,200 km of streams & rivers.
The park has also seen the deaths of two famous Canadian artists, Tom Thomson & Ken Danby.

2004 and dawn bubbling through the mist on an icy Algonquin morning when we rose early to watch the wildlife scuttle around. It was peaceful and a reminder of how the world could be without humankind and their squabbles and insatiable appetite for trinkets (soon discarded) that threatens the stability of the natural world. I attended a debate on solving our plastics problem yesterday evening. It's left me melancholy.

2004 and our short trip to Algonquin Park in Canada. A haven, away from mobile phones and the trials of life, but with some luxuries thrown in by the resort (like great food). Plenty of canoeing, trekking & wildlife watching. A great break from humankind, who can be a trial!

The Potomac River is named after an #Algonquin endonym but it sounds so close to the #Greek word “potamos” (meaning “river”) that every time I see “Potomac River” I think “River River”
