Here's @parismarx with an excellent article on LeGuin's warning that producing commodities is not the same as creating art. AI only manages the former and will help the corporatocracy to close us off from a better future for humanity. Read it!

Just submitted my article on AI (https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515) to @eLife, hoping that they'll have a look at it despite it being purely theoretical research.
I have a suspicion that @ct_bergstrom may find it interesting.
The urgent aim is to not only reach AI nerds (via the AI section of @arxiv_cs), but also the community of experimental biologists who tend to sometimes forget about the organism, its organization, and the unique characteristics of living systems.
Teaser: my new preprint will be dropping on @arxiv_cs on Friday (if it passes moderation).
Artificial "agents" are not (and won't be) proper agents.
3 fundamental differences btw living & algorithmic systems:
(1) autopoiesis,
(2) embodiment (no hardware/software distinction),
(3) large vs. small worlds (problem of relevance).
Organisms & algorithms have very different capabilities & limitations.
Say goodbye to #AGI.
Our first arts & science outreach event for the #PushingTheBoundaries project this Friday was a full success.
Living beings are not machines!
We had a higher turnout than expected.
In this video, we explain what we are doing: https://youtu.be/kZwrBtz_CHM.

Thus: neither AI-based nor human-intuition based strategies will work.
Seems like the perfect recipe for chaos. Am I getting something wrong here? Or is it true that one of the most likely immediate outcomes of current AI will be a rather drastic and global breakdown of the current financial market without much of a plan of how to fix the problem?
Many struggle to make sense of the current AI debate.
Simple guideline: if someone claims the rise of machines is inevitable (they'll outhink us soon) then don't trust that person's claims. They may understand algorithms, but they certainly don't understand humans.
Our "Pushing the Boundaries" project publishes quick updates and thoughts on a regular basis.

Why is it that the sense-makers always immediately stop making sense when the next sense-making challenge comes along?
Don't fall for the delusion that the world is a machine, that we are machines.
#AI is nothing but #AlgorithmicMimicry
Techno-trandscendentalism #TESCREAL is spreading like wildfire in influential tech-affine circuits, and also in the so-called #MeaningMaking and #GameB communities.
It is an ideology that is dangerous and deluded.

Gods in the machine? https://bigthink.com/the-future/ai-religions
Actually, AI religion already exists. It is the cult of techno-transcendentalism, pushed by the community of AGI researchers themselves: http://www.johannesjaeger.eu/blog/machine-metaphysics-and-the-cult-of-techno-transcendentalism.
Btw: have you read my rant on the cult of techno-transcendentalism yet?

I know there is too much talk about #AI at the moment.
But I've written a blog post, anyway, because I
think I have something to add.
#TechnoTranscendentalism and #AGI as a religious cult, with a neo-feudalist political program: http://www.johannesjaeger.eu/blog/machine-metaphysics-and-the-cult-of-techno-transcendentalism
#AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry /1

Hot take of the day: the only thing the recent #AI "debate" has revealed is that we grossly overestimate both machine and human intelligence.
"Es ist absurd, bei Chat-GPT von künstlicher Intelligenz zu sprechen." @emilymbender bringt den KI-Hype auf den Punkt.
