I don’t have expert knowledge or lived experience of indigenous issues, so take this with what ever amount of salt you see fit.

I do know a fair bit about the current #HousingCrisis and #homelessness, and it’s been leading me to wonder about the current situation in #AliceSprings and across the north of Australia.

From what I’ve heard indigenous communities mostly have public/social housing, which is poorly built, unmaintained and overcrowded. Just a look at the census data shows NT indigenous households are twice the size of others, and that’s an *average*. Not to mention a nearly 20% undercount.

I’m not surprised that people living in crappy overheated overcrowded houses get violent with each other, drink a lot, or that the kids would rather be out running round with their mates than home under those circumstances. Nor am I surprised that CSA is rife when kids are crammed in with extended family members who’ve been formerly institutionalized and likely survived abuse themselves.

So how come I don’t hear people talking about a #HousingFirst approach to solving this? I’m sure some people are and I’m just not seeing it in the media I get, but I also googled around and found nothing much.

There are plenty of trials to show Housing First works and — for the bureaucrats — that it saves a fuckton of money vs other approaches. Indigenous communities have needed it urgently for decades. I’m boggled it’s not being proposed.

I'm not a doctor but fucksake, even I know this. We are just doomed. Really, we are.

This is one of my favourite rock formations. It's from Alherrkentye/Trephina Gorge about 3 hours east of Mparntwe/Alice Springs. I spent a lot of time here as a kid, but didn't notice this rock formation until I visited as an adult.

I cannot imagine the geological pressure required to twist the rock layers this way, and I do wonder how long it took.
