New variant of my kind-of #alife task. The bots can push/pull treasure and walls. They are controlled by a neural network, trained with sep-CMA-ES to push treasure together.

Interesting tree-evolution #alife project. (13min video, found via Reddit /r/alife)
Was great chatting with Bert Chan (Google Brain Tokyo) and author of #ALIFE Lenia. Thanks to my colleague Jeff West for inviting him.

As someone that has dabbled in #Alife myself, one difference with the #MathOnco models we make is philosophical: one can build an Alife model just for the fun of exploring it but most #MathOnco models are designed to be the simples model that can address a specific question
Thrilled to have @anilkseth as a keynote speaker at #ALIFE2023!
Showcasing how his early influential work on #complexity, #autonomy and #emergence in #ALife has influenced modern #neuroscience of #consciousness, where he now plays a leading role.

This may be a unpopular take on fedi, but I'm a fan of #generativeAI. #MachineLearning, #AI and #ALife was big reasons I got into Computer Science over 20 years ago. Finally having access to the hardware needed for large models are really exciting, and being able to dive into it at work has been reinvigorating.
But it's also frustrating that it's caught up in a bullshit tech-bro hype-cycle, and few know what they are talking about. There are just so many bad takes responding to bad takes...

Starting now! More #ALife @ALifeConf at CC Tokyo!

Ok these fish are a lot smarter! 🧠
Can you spot them turning towards circles? (healthy food)
Can you spot them avoiding squares? (unhealthy food)
Can you spot them following other fish? (fish)
#creativecoding + #alife + #ai
If I make the 'energy cost' for turning really high, the fish evolve to spin around like this 🌀
This seems a bit unintuitive, but I think it's because 'changing direction' is too expensive, so they just spin and make minor adjustments.
#creativecoding + #ai + #alife
In this specific simulation, the fish eventually became purple, and developed quite a successful 'loop-di-loop' behaviour. 🎢
I have a few theories about why this is a successful strategy for them! Do you have any ideas?
#creativecoding + #ai + #alife
Luckily, we can speed up the simulation to make them evolve quicker.
This gif is around 4x speed 🐟💨
The fish that you saw in the youtube video had been evolved at 400x speed for a full day!
#creativecoding + #ai + #alife
Let's evolve some fish! 🐟
They start out pretty clueless...
But with each split, they mutate into something that might (or might not) be smaller!
#creativecoding + #ai + #alife
Ok this "squirm" rule is simple and fun, thanks @timhutton and @rheophore for bringing it up!
I didn't remove my bots from last experiment, they keep trying to push stuff together. Kind of #alife I guess.
I've spent the last 3 months making a 9 minute video... and it's finally finished! ☁️
(will release tomorrow evening - just gotta do a better render)

I have several artificial life simulation projects. This is a video of one of them. Soon I plan to release a video on a similar, but simpler project. In it I will describe in detail the work of the genome
