As a simple explanation for how it works, it treats the sequences as an array of characters (amino acids and gaps). It counts gaps at a percent threshold (default 99%), meaning if a gap at a position in present in 99% of sequences, the column is removed.

This conserves the positions across a global alignment, while removing finicky inserts that may only be unique to a small subset of sequences.

Any BLAST users around?

What is this number in the BLAST results? The first number is identity-% and the last is Expect value, but this remains a mystery. It is not the length of the alignment or anything else I can think of...

In the past month I ordered
Pathfinder Core Rulebook 2e.
D&D Monster Manual 5e.

I plan to order
Pathfinder Bestiary 2e
D&D Player's Handbook 5e
D&D Dungeon Master's Guide 5e

I want the existing versions before the new versions supplant them, as I want the versions that contain alignments.

As I understand, the new ORC version of #P2e is dropping #alignment completely and the upcoming update to D&D, whatever it's called, is downplaying alignment significantly.

The goal of the paper is not to provide an exact answer to this question, as the answer will surely depend on parameters that we cannot precisely quantify. Instead, the paper develops some simple models to elucidate the economic forces that are involved in thinking through these questions.

One key sensitivity is whether we use log utility or CRRA utility with γ = 2 or more. With log utility, remarkably large amounts of existential risk are tolerated in order to take advantage of huge advances in living standards. But with γ = 2 or more, gambling with existential risk is much less appealing.

Next, even singularities that deliver infinite consumption immediately are not as valuable as one might have thought. With bounded utility (e.g. γ > 1), infinite consumption merely pushes us to the upper bound and the marginal utility of the additional consumption is small. The finding that with γ = 2 or more, social welfare in these models suggests taking great care with existential risk continues to hold even in the presence of a singularity.

Finally, one way in which it can be optimal to entertain greater amounts of existential risk is if A.I. leads to new innovations that improve life expectancy.
