Al zijn vader was orkestleider van een bigband, en de jonge Al begon al in 1940 mee te spelen met zijn vader in deze band.
Later zou hij gaan spelen bij trompetist #WillieMitchell zijn band. Hier ontmoet hij #SteveCropper en #DonaldDuckDunn, en ook #BookerTJones, deze haalt hem naar het #Stax label.
Terwijl zal hij ook voor Mitchell blijven spelen.
Bij Stax vormt hij samen met Jones, Duck en Cropper het legendarische
