@grantpotter - I probably literally cut my teeth on #MAD magazine. It was always there. I see this photo of #aljaffee and Will Elder in school in 1936... and think "oh man, the poor teacher trying to keep this gang of idiots in line".

But when I looked for this photo, I learned that "Jaffee's teachers at the Bronx's Herman Ridder Junior High School tested Jaffee's class for arts aptitude," and sent him and Elder on to art school.

Here's to some patient and indulgent teachers of the 1930s!

I was obsessed with MAD as a kid, and it is an obsession that has never waivered. I am 45 years old now, and reading it still brings me great joy.

Al lived to a 102. And over that century (plus 2) he entertained and brought joy to millions of people.

We should all be so lucky to live a life that long and meaningful.

When Mad Magazine would credit it's contributors on the cover, they simply printed, "Made by the usual gang of idiots." Al Jaffee was one of the original idiots.

PERHAPS THIS HAPPENED?

#AlJaffee was required to perform a demeaning task in order to be hired by Mad Magazine.

He was instructed to take off his shoes and socks and rub his feet on a grindstone before being allowed to join the staff.

This was to ensure that he was “ground down” and willing to work hard for little pay.

The task was symbolic of the low-paying, high-stress jobs available to aspiring cartoonists at the time.

It is also thought to have been a test of Jaffee's dedication to his art.

RIP #aljaffee - you made many people smile in your 102 years
