Welcome to the start of your training in the mystical arts of magic.

Before you get excited about being given free rein in what you probably imagine to be a book of spells, I must disappoint you.

The Almanac is not a manual, but a guide intended to kerb, but not eliminate your enthusiasm.

I will not go into specifics as the details will be provided in the practical classes associated with your education in magic.

📷 The tallest #tree in the neighborhood. It's 79º in my part of the #Southeast today at 2:30, and 85º is forecast for Thursday. That'll top the record (77º) for that date.

If it's this #warm in #February, will it be 125º in August, traditionally our hottest (and muggiest) month? Last August, we saw feels-like 113º for two days.

Schreib-what? What the hell is a #Schreibkalender, you may ask. Here we go:

While being a characteristic part of the contemporary media ensemble in the German-speaking areas of Europe, the #Schreibkalender was produced from its beginning in 1540 in high quantities and reached very large audiences. For many, this kind of #almanac was the first contact with a printed paper product, the first access to printed words and symbols and images.

I'm working on a revision of the 2023 #Jewish #Almanac that I released a few days ago --- this version will have smaller pages (4.25x8.5 inch) to more like the traditional Farmer's Almanac, but I'm also adding some more content.

One of the areas of new content I'm adding is a list of organizations that are engaged in left-oriented activism. I have my own list, but I'm sure I'm going to miss some, so please reply with your favorites.

When I was researching Rachel, I #Found her #FindAGrave #Memorial, which ends with these #Words:

Note to friends who don’t always buy the farmer’s #almanac: I was excited for grab the last copy in the local #Pennsylvania grocery store. Horoscope looked good, but how I am questioning all of it after reading the #publicsafety announcement

The pages following the monthly #calendars in this #almanac by Joseph Greis provided additional information on phases of the moon and length of daylight, as well as traditional peasant folk wisdom.

E.g. for January:
When on S. Vincent's there's sunshine, one therefore hopes for good wine.

And for February:
When it rains after the new moon, then it will rain for a full month.

Each monthly opening of the #almanac began with the names of the months in both modern & traditional Germanic form, and a woodcut emblem including the zodiacal sign & characteristic activities of the season--here, for January: Virgo, a domestic meal, and warming oneself by the fire.

Additional information included length of the day, phases of moon, sunrise, & weather conditions. Each day is marked by its saint's name, and the weeks, by a relevant Scriptural passage (red crosses=fast days)

As a product of a Catholic empire, the #almanac begins with crown & church

left: birthdays of the members of the royal family of Austria

right:
top: the Numerus aureus, solar & lunar cycles, and the like, necessary for the calculation of religious holidays in the Gregorian calendar (these would have required the use of additional tables or other information), as well as the time from Christmas to Ash Wednesday.

middle: moveable feast days, according to the Roman Missal.

bottom: Ember Days.

On the cover of this Austrian #almanac published by Joseph Greis, a middle-class man, identifiable by his garb, observes the heavens with a telescope--emblem of science and erudition. Next to him, a peasant with a spade stands and extends a free hand: in greeting? explanation? We cannot tell.

Taken together, though, the two figures certainly encompass and indicate the standard content of the #book: calendars for each month, along with meteorological information and folk wisdom.
