I'm David, I'm a mathematician, and I share mathematics things that interest me, often merely adjacent (more or less) to my own expertise. Or sometimes just maths I think is cool.

I also sometimes ask questions on topics I'm interested in, from a point of view of a non-standard foundational/philosophical approach to what is otherwise common and well-understood material.

I'm happy to chat about maths, but I tend not to follow people back because I need to limit the amount of material in my timeline.

I didn't get an academic job (hence my radio silence: I've mostly been moping 😔 and brushing up on my python/R) and am currently looking at a pivot to data science/industry in general. I've got plans for learning the stuff I need to learn and I have a couple of bootcamp-y things lined up so I can get some more industry contacts and a line on the resume that looks vaguely like relevant experience.

If anyone has advice about this sort of thing, I'd love to chat!

One of the more striking differences between #Academia and #Industry is the turnover in higher management. Whereas a tenured professor basically stays at the same job until they retire, I've seen over a dozen people in high-up management jobs change jobs or leave the company in the less than a year I've worked for this employer. Today, we received an email about 2 further executive board members leaving. Still not sure how to feel about it. At least there's new positions for women-leaders #AltAc

470 labels/stickers prepared for samples that need to be taken in the 1.5 week pilot plant trials after I return from my holidays. I'm proud that I not only fought the STARLIMS system and won (only had to restart twice because of time-outs), but also made a very easy solution for the 200+ samples that are processed locally: used my excel overview in a simple mail merger with new pages for each sample, which means it's easy to print the individual stickers 🤓 #AltAc #Research #Microbiology

A question for the #altAc community. In a twist, I am considering *returning* to the academy, albeit in a staff job. I've been running my own business for seven years though (doing similar work, but clients are generally one-off, not long term). My references (ie, supervisors and colleagues) are very very stale. Seven years stale at least. Some are even retired.

How would you recommend handling the references?
