Two weeks at the new job (first post-PhD #altacademia), and there are lots of thoughts. Can’t put them all on here, but perhaps a few:
- This isn’t anything new. I’ve been on LinkedIn for awhile, but wow what a different world of very curated content, strange takes, and uncritical “expert” opinions on everything. Of course good networking and some good advice too if you do it right.
- If you look around, you’d be surprised how much relevant expertise you can find in your PhD. It’s been a bit of a journey learning how to advocate for myself instead of letting imposter syndrome rule.
- There’s something really calming about being on a team where people have organized roles and domains of expertise. Sure depending on the academic group, support can vary (I think I was on the better side of things), but it’s no secret that there’s something that feels oppressive, anxiety-inducing, and lonely about the structure.
