I first heard of the Waterboys with "The Whole of The Moon" (a banger), but one summer I worked at an art gallery where they had a bunch of tapes that I secretly copied for myself one at a time on Saturday night between my shifts. "A Pagan Place" was one of these.

It's not a completely cheerless album, but let's say like 50% bleak. And this "gulag ballad" (a term I just came up with) is definitely on that side of things. It's a powerful story whose always-timely moral is "Dictators are bad."

None of The Above is/was Tony Mason, a guy from La Jolla who gave away home-recorded cassettes on the Internet; some of them were clever and some were juvenile. This one is squarely in the middle.
