NYC band Helmet release their second album, “Meantime”
I was floored by their 1990 debut album, “Strap It On”. It was one of the heaviest sounding metal bands I’d ever heard. Not the kind of metal I was familiar with. This was more “alt-metal” with its interesting time signatures and staccato guitar work.
So when the band got signed to a major label (Interscope Records), I was really looking forward to their next album. And they delivered. Right from the opening track.
Meantime takes the band's sound to the next level. Much more polished and sonically pleasing. So crisp, and big, and loud. It really highlights the jazz-influenced chords that create their unique sound.
I got to see them live, finally, as they toured in support of this album.

I'm listening to Fear Inoculum by #Tool. Danny Carey is possibly the drummer I admire more than anyone and Maynard is just the most incredible song writer and composer. But it got me thinking about what genre they are. Apple Music has them down as metal, but I wouldn't class them as metal. Apple goes on to mention influences from #ProgMetal, #SpaceRock, #StonerMetal and #PostRock, and how they influenced #AltMetal. What genre what you put them as? I'm making up 'progressive alt-rock' for them.
