@Dieudonnee also, we stopped diversifying the sources. Some dropped. Impact was captured as on a diverse set of downstream uses.

Tracking mentions on social media never implied social impact, as far as I know. Societal impact is also not just "the laymen" but also researchers in other domains. I need to read the article, but from the abstract that seemed ignored there.

So, tl;dr, I understood: 1. is not context-free, 2. it aims to characterize impact 2/2

@Dieudonnee in the original discussions it was not only about numbers. Back then, it was about questioning the traditional "impact factor" is holy grail, and instead in showing the diversity of kinds of impacts. And without problems, you can use "altmetrics providers" without the numbers. Old habits die hard.

But altmetrics have always been about the context! Misuse is of all times, sadly 1/

Update. In "mean [] scores are highest on average for mixed-gender authored items (30.54). Exclusively female authored research generates, on average, the lowest scores (19.23) as compared to exclusively male-authored research (24.49)."

Journal performance beyond the . Cristina Huidiu at Elsevier (a former librarian) says responsible use of metrics - article metrics, journal metrics, & - can be business indicators to help publishers to make decisions.

Can get insights into impact beyond citations and trends in fields, from patents and funding.

Collaboration patterns of existing authors can show new directions of their work.

Altmetrics such as article-level metrics can be useful, says George Vousden, because the Journal Impact Factor is not useful for individual article impact. However, attention such as on social media can be due to negative concerns about errors or integrity as well as scientific quality.

"Quality" can only really be judged qualitatively, but @PLOS is introducing indicators.

Update. In political science, "journal articles authored exclusively by female scholars score 27% lower on average [on Altmetric Attention Scores, AAS] than exclusively male-authored outputs. However, men are also more likely to write articles with an AAS of zero. These patterns are shaped by the presence of high-scoring male “superstars” whose research attracts much online attention."

Our colleague, Pablo de Castro, has recently published an interesting blog post on the implications of the Twitter exodus on alternative metrics.

"It’s not just that the desertion of large swathes of very active communicators in the scholarly comms domain to Mastodon has dried up the references (tweets) ... [but that its] rendered the Altmetric snapshot unreliable."

Realized I let my post get auto-deleted, so I’ll make a new one:

I’m into , , and . Specifically, I’m really interested in Reddit and GitHub to find important insights into the impact of research(ers).

I believe the quality of engagements is far more meaningful than the quantity, so I’m inherently distrustful fanciful metrics (*cough* altmetric score).

Spare time, I like being with my family, cooking, listening to music, and playing chess.

Anyone know if ImpactStory is any good? They seem to have auto-generated a profile for my work: profiles.impactstory.org/u/000

It appears that a login is only possible via Twitter and the ORCID auth is broken?
