@nus It was genuinely quite impressive. They hosted #BurningMan on there twice during Covid; one a full replacement (as I recall), and one a side-event.

I loved that you could fly, and some of the (now lost!) worlds that people created were amazing, ultra-detailed and, utterly ridiculous in terms of effort vs reward. But the creators didn't worry about that!

I'd certainly list #AltSpace as one of the unsung major creations in #Cyberspace - And further proof of "survival of the most mediocre".

I know #AltSpace meant a lot to those who were active there over the years, so it's sad to see it go. I only visited every so often for fun and exploration, and occasionally for professional "meetups" but it was a solid virtual space option.

If something like this can't survive "the Metaverse" I think we're going to be hard pressed to see another version broadly accepted any time soon.

People switching from #vrchat to #altspace, #neos and #ChilloutVR, are clearly not realising still that the issue is not the actions of one game studio, but proprietary software in and of itself.
