I don't recall a time I was not an ally of our indigenous peoples. My parents ensured I grew up respecting and appreciating Aborriginal and Torres Straight Islander people and understood their struggles. If memory serves me correctly, I signed a sorry day book a fellow student at school created back in 1998. I will continue to fight for indigenous rights and proper recognition of their trauma; because sorry is a good start, but the healing is not yet done.

Today is not Sorry Day. The image below provides some information on why today is significant.

On January 26, I had the opportunity to speak with Mayor of Moonee Valley Council Pierce Tyson, Cr. Rose Iser and Moonee Valley City Council CEO Helen Sui, about Indigenous healing and how we can be more sensitive to our First Nations people on January 26.
We also discussed a local project I have been wanting and proposing for several years and Mayor Tyson was gracious enough to invite me to send him my proposal, in the hope that he may be able to advocate for it on my behalf (watch this space). Both Cr. Iser and Ms. Sui were encouraged by my enthusiasm to create local change for indigenous peoples, and were incredibly supportive and enthusiastic.
I also had an opportunity to speak with Niddrie Greens candidate Declan McGinness, where we discussed how collaboration not politics, will see the most positive changes for our communities come to fruition.
I thank all of these wonderful people for their warm hospitality and genuine care in what I had to say.

Yesterday, I had the privilege and honour of attending Bunjil’s Marroun Healing Ceremony 2023. It was a moving day not just of mourning, but a day filled with hope of creating a truly inclusive future for everyone in our community and our country.
Thank you Aunty Di (Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elder; Dianne Kerr) for you beautifully heartfelt welcome and sharing what the day means to you.
Thank you Courtney Ugle of the Noongar mob and the AFLW for sharing your deeply personal and difficult story and for being an example of what we can achieve despite adversity and continuing to seek an inclusive and equal community for all.
Thank you Nhanbu Togip for teaching us your traditional dance and including us in your customs, it was an honor to be taught by you.
Thank you David Arden for your sharing your music; music that is deeply personal and enlightening.
Finally, thank you Moonee Valley City Council for hosting the event, working tirelessly to bring healing to our Indigenous communities and being an example to aspire to.

I write to you from Wurundjeri Country in Naarm. I stand with our First Nations People. I support an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. I support changing the date of Australia Day. I acknowledge this land was stolen and it's sovereignty never ceded.
Will you join me in being a voice for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people?

A little weekend reading that be of interest to some folks on here, Statements from the Soul: The Moral Case for the Uluru Statement from the Heart. It's a collection of essays from a broad range of faith leaders from lots of different traditions and religions reflecting on the Uluru Statement and the journey to this year's referendum on the Voice.

“Saying ‘Sorry’ is not enough. Generations are still being stolen. We need action, as well as words. Paying the Rent is a powerful action to strengthen First Nations sovereignty, belonging and culture.”

Anthony Albanese on the nipaluna/Hobart Town Hall steps this morning. He was sending Pat Farmer off on his 14,000km run around this country to demonstrate his commitment and support to the Uluru Statement from the Heart and The Voice. Get behind him as he travels around our land.

South has become the first Australian state to allow an Indigenous voice to parliament.

The legislation allows for six regions to be established across South Australia, each with directly elected representatives.

Two members from each group will then form the State First Nations Voice, which can address either house of state parliament on legislation of interest to people.

From Blackfulla Revolution:

"the Voice will be subservient to the parliament; that is parliament will continue to control the destiny of Australia"
PM Anthony Abanese January 9th, 2023

"Subservient meaning "Prepared to obey others unquestioningly. Less important; subordinate. Obsequious" Obsequious meaning "Characterised by, or showing servile obedience and excessive eagerness to please."

Just another day in the colony."

So i get asked to speak about my life, as part of a living storytelling event with 2 other people. A very polite environment.

I'm first, I talk about my dad, Bert Groves, family, art, community development and how i got to be where i'm living now, even throwing in a cultural story.

The next speaker is a local historian, ex journo of the local paper.

Last speaker is a staff member's husband who spoke about building a hospital in PNG during peak COVID (and how they were changing the culture there). He started off however, talking about the proud 16 days he had on the replica of The Endeavour. For those who don't know, this is the boat Cook as a representative of the British Empire arrived to these shores in. This speaker's slideshow ends with an image of the boat with the words "The greatest gift to Australia".

So i politely let some questions through.

And then i tell him that's interesting because my great grandmother's people are from Sydney, from the harbour. (My surname is in fact a first fleet name.) That there are records from the boat of the fires all the way along the south coast to what is now Sydney (sending message, a warning of arrival) and a story of a woman on that coast in a canoe who rushes back to the beach, abandons it, clutching a child, runs into the bushland. I wanted to know if he travelled that way in the boat.

Be careful of who you have in a room. Because it can sure make a very polite room turn very awkward very quickly.

A bill that could undo years of Coalition-led voter suppression will be up for debate in the coming days

Call on Senator Don Farrell – a key decision maker on this legislation – to make voting accessible to every eligible person!

It's colonials like Dick Dawkins that mean we can't have nice things, like a stable climate. They insist on throwing away bc "not white". Similarly, they've denigrated Culture on the continent, & run the place into nothing but overly hot holes.
