Anyone have good alternatives for #roon ?

I’ve had a subscription with them for 6 years now. Kinda getting tired of the cost:benefit ratio.

What I do like: Metadata, organization of the library contents, decent UI, mobile app support (Roon more than ARC, but ARC is ok)

What I don’t really need or like: Remote playing (controlling other speakers in the house), paying Tidal if I want good recommendations, kinda bloated and slow app

I’ve used plenty of #vlc , #foobar, #clementine / #strawberry, even #amarok back in the day

I’m really looking for any music solution that’s a little bit of a media manager w/metadata, especially if it can manage all that on a server.

I don’t mind paying for services, I’m just tired of the Roon bills on top of streaming services too.

Like - I want less than Roon but more than VLC.

Any recommendations?

Is #Amarok still alive? There's also #Vvave and #Elisa, although I can't really speak to any of them as my local media app of choice is #Vlan #VLC.

Just learning that my favorite #Linux audio player #Clementine didn't have any new release in 6 years or something. Any other decent players that are #Amarok-like without needing to pull in half of KDE?

#bangerz To my disappointment, I've heard #MikeOldfield's latest (and last, I suspect) release – the #TubularBells 4 demo. I can see why he never continued. I think Oldfield got bored with himself. It sounds like Tubular Bells 2023, except hitting different notes.

In a way I appreciate him retiring once he realised he has nothing more to say. In another way, I wish he'd record #Amarok 2 while also not talking to the press about his ah… views.

Forgot that I needed to rebuild #amarok so I've been using less feature complete media players.

It's fun to go through what I wrote about in #LinuxExpres 15+ years ago. In February 2007 I wrote about #Amarok. It was a unique music player across all platforms back then. I knew of several non-IT people who switched to #Linux just because of Amarok.

Let the despair wash over and exit through every pore.

#Amarok - Ein Album, das von #MikeOldfield absichtlich so komponiert wurde, dass es möglichst wenig kommerziell verwertbar ist (da er sich mit Richard Branson, Virgin Records überworfen hatte, aber seinen Vertrag noch erfüllen musste).

Die CD hat genau einen 60 min. langen Track (d.h. keine Vinyl möglich) der zudem so arrangiert ist, dass sich keine Single-Auskopplung davon ableiten lässt. Dennoch, ich finde das Album genial und muss immer wieder ob der Umstände grinsen :)

There was never a time when the #amarok did not pad softly behind her, for she'd saved its life.

Ah, good. I knew I didn't restore my movies from backup when I replaced my hard drive (seen them all, don't need them).

I DID restore Music tho (need that) I see.

Development on my favorite music player in #KDE (#Amarok) way stalled so it was depreciated in favor of Elisa which took me thirty seconds to dislike.

Now #Clementine seems really slick and Amarok-like. There's an Android version, allows you to control your Desktop player from it (hard-coded IP???, no) but I use #KDEConnect.

I expected to sense the #amarok. To hear four footfalls padding, or perhaps the scrape of a soft growl. I didn't think it would use #mimicry to become my shadow in the dark. It even killed me in my style, a single claw run through my eye. I'd use an arrow, but still. Clean.
