On those rare occasions someone phones me up and needs to regurgitate a 407-character alphanumeric at me for any reason (most recently I had to RMA a dead motherboard), I like to have a bookmarklet on my bookmark toolbar rather than firing up a text editor, etc.
Why? Simply put, I always have a browser open and no matter where I am if I'm in front of one of my PCs I'm a middle-click away from having a very simple text editor with no persistence.
Example bookmarklet:
data:text/html,<html contenteditable><head><title>Note</title><style>body{font-family:monospace}</style></head>
This opens an editable tab that acts as a buffer that I can then copy and paste from. Nothing fancy, it disappears on close. Everything between <head>
and </head>
is also optional.
