Don't despair, @gemlog; in many ways the world is a better place than when you and I were born. And even the housing situation in Canada may improve, now that certain politicians are making it a key issue. #ClimateChange is serious, to be sure, but we live in one of the countries of the world in which its consequences will be the least dire.
I'm fond of #AmbroseBierce's definition of a #conservative, though it lacks policy content. "Liberal" in modern Canada means believing Ls should govern.

A cover, but it’s such a great version. This is another one that takes me somewhere else- to “An Occurrence On Owl Creek Bridge”.

Useless Quote for 14 Feb:
"In the novel the writer's thought is tethered to probability, as a domestic horse to the hitching-post, but in romance it ranges at will over the entire region of the imagination"
~ Ambrose Bierce, "The Devil's Dictionary" entry for Romance (1917)
Listening to his "Iconoclastic Memories of the Civil War" while working. Funny, absurd, sad. Bierce, fighting for the Union, took a head wound during the war that made him irritable and subject to collapse, which he mentions here.

Is it nitpicking to complain about not being able to find any #AmbroseBierce books instore at our "best" bookshops in Melbourne, "world literary capital and UNESCO City of Literature"? Sure they're "available to order", but sometimes you just want to scratch that book itch right away.
OK, so maybe Ambrose Bierce phase 1 (digital painting post-pencil sketch) is too sinister, but we're working on it.
Ever been to a dim place where black stars rise in a sky overlooking the lake of Hali? If you never came back — and you never will, trust me — here's a postcard available at the local gift shop upon which you could write a final missive.

> “God created war so that Americans would learn geography,” said Mark Twain...this quip began as a non-humorous comment about war and evolved into a satirical jibe. Early comical instances have no clear originator. The prevalent modern form of the joke that mentions God should be credited to #PaulRodriguez..The linkages to #AmbroseBierce and #MarkTwain are unsupported.

#Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal who wishes to replace them with others

@gemlog @bob
I'm partial to the #AmbroseBierce definition:
Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal who wishes to replace them with others.
@hypolite I think #AmbroseBierce gets more to the heart of it:
"Conservative. noun. A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from a liberal, who wishes to replace them with others."
