When you're editing a great story that leads you down a rabbit hole of carcinization. I love helping authors prepare their work for readers, but I also love all the rabbit holes editing sends me down! #AmEditing

Doing a little research so I can help a client who's writing a story from the POV of a horse.
You just never know where the job of editor is going to take you.

Before I could learn to love writing, I had to learn to love reading.
Before I could learn to love reading, I had to learn to love learning.
Curiosity drove me to learn.
There's a lesson here for those who care to see it.

Having a hard time reconciling what needs to be cut out of my novel to fix the pacing vs keeping the small moments that emphasize the interior struggle that is actually central to the character arc.
Thanks very much to all my virtual breakout room colleagues for sharing thoughts, hopes, experiences and more!
Bring on day 2! I'm all ready now.
[*For more on critical generosity in editorial practice, read the excellent keynote address for Editorial Freelancers Association's conference last month by Cathy Hannabach: https://ideasonfire.net/editing-as-worldmaking/
Two themed networking sessions done to kick off the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)'s annual conference for me:
1) where I'd like my business to be in 5 years;
2) training I've most enjoyed/want to do.
1) I don't have a plan beyond finding new challenges;
2) I'm doing an academic DE course and want to practice 'critical generosity'* in editing more deliberately (and in hindsight that's my permanent goal!).
BTW - I'm not ignoring messages about 4 Kings. It's still there staring me whenever I open the We're Not Brothers script to edit. #amediting #writing #personalblog

Me, finishing the last draft of my book: wow, 140,000 words, well done me!
Me, inputting the line edits: WHY IS THIS BOOK SO LOOOOONG.
Anyway. Halfway there on inputting hundreds of tiny little changes 👍🏻

"How do I handle editorial feedback that I disagree with?"
Take time to process the feedback (a week or two is ideal), then consider whether the suggested changes improve your manuscript. Open communication with your editor is key.

Me seeing a discrepancy in how a word is treated in a document: This must be fixed, someone needs to make the call on whether or not it's capitalized.
Also me: Shoot, I'm that person.

It's official. A little less than 24h to go for the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)'s 2023 annual conference to get started! Folks in Glasgow, don't forget to share pics. 🙌🏾📸
How many times will I have to explain that 1) readers, whether they consciously know or not, recognize GPT content and 2) this makes the information presented less credible?
Using such content to represent you as an "expert" or as a writer risks a hit to reputation. And it's not something I can make up for through editing.
“know where the bodies are buried” is passive voice? You have found me out, grammar check. I buried the bodies. I’m the one! They are all my victimsss #AmWriting #AmEditing
Yesterday, I finished up 4 pages behind schedule. Today, I'm 6 pages behind. Progress!

Mmmm, plot holes. *monch.*
I feel like I didn't get a lot done today, but I think I actually did. I had to start putting together a chronology of events by day, rather than by chapter, so that I could figure out what the *moon* of all things would be doing in two particular scenes—groan, but I think it gave my brain the space to figure out an even better catalyst for a character than the one I'd JUST REWRITTEN yesterday. Also groan, but an improvement overall!
I usually try for encouraging words in the morning with a poetic flair to make them interesting. Today my brain is not in that mode. And that's okay! It means I'm not ready for a session of #amwriting But it does mean that I can dive in with knife and fork and get to cut down my word count. I'm coming for the ridiculous flowery language that my brain thought sounded so nice yesterday. 🔪 #amediting
Exciting book mail! This is the paperback edition of The Fellspyre Chronicles: Book 1. I worked on the TTRPG section for it. It is so incredibly cool to see my name listed the lead proofreader for that section. Thanks to the always awesome Arianna Turturro for having these copies sent to me.
