"Untitled (Cracked Watermelon)," Charles Ethan Porter, c. 1880.

A black American artist, Porter's choice of watermelon seems defiant here. Stereotypically associated with black people then (and now), he depicts one in loving detail and elevates a stereotype to art. There's probably some significance to how it looks dropped and broken, as well.

From the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Wanted to take this one home from Bonhams NYC, but... outbid. 'The Hidden Apple,' Philip Evergood (1901-1973). In the mid-1940s, his attention was increasingly toward the plight of women. The painting "creates so vividly the sense of a vital and vulgar humanity." Evergood said, "There's a universal Eve there, yet there's a pathos, I felt." liveauctioneers.com/item/15880

Earlier this month I visited @crystalbridgesmuseum with friends. Things had changed a bit from my last visit, but always an inspiration. It may not be the easiest museum to get to, but well worth it!

"Celia Thaxter's Garden, Isles of Shoals, Maine," Frederick Childe Hassam, 1880.

The juxtaposition of the bright red poppies and the rugged rocks in the background make this memorable. Hassam was the grand poobah of American Impressionists, and this view of poet Celia Thaxter's wildflower garden is one of his best.

"Since I can remember, art has been magical. That has never changed... It is especially in times like these that we need to look to the spiritual. In art we find it. I cling to the belief that creativity brings truth, that art inspires wisdom, And I continue to believe that art is here to tell us who we have been, who we are, and who we can become."

"Episode at Fire Island," Philip Evergood (1901-1973), 1967. Evergood was one of the leading Modernists of the 20th Century, combining abstraction and magic realism. He was a "figurative painter when much of the art world placed greater value on abstraction, & a moralist when moralizing was not considered an option for serious painters" Private collection.

Summertime! 'Balls on the Beach,' 1960s, Philip Evergood (1901-1973). A leading Social Realist, Evergood also became one of the leading Modernists with compositions that bordered on magic realism. He distanced himself from political & social issues to figures more fanciful & free, with an almost childlike sweetness in his work.
Private collection.

"The Fox Hunt," Winslow Homer, 1893.

A gorgeous, dramatic picture, one of the artist's best. Arguments over the meaning range from a depiction of Darwinian survival, to a sort of self-portrait, with Homer as the fox and the crows representing negative forces in his life.

From the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. I've been there!

"Fishing Party on Long Island Sound Off New Rochelle," James Goodwyn Clonney, 1847.

Looks like a relaxing day, doesn't it? Too bad I'm not much for fishing. Clonney's work often has hints of humor, like how the old man is skeptical of the young man's catch.
