Last night I bought a brick on Monument Circle here in Indianapolis for my 2nd great granduncle, William T. Barton. He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served with the 9th Kentucky Infantry and was killed in action in the Battle of Missionary Ridge.

I’ll make sure and post pictures of the brick after it’s placed. It’s going to be a few months.

Henry Edwards, Pensacola Lighthouse, July 1 2040, Southern Redoubt

I had a sticky moment with Stonewall Jackson’s ghost outside the lantern room.

“You’ve been eating field peas, boy.”

Field peas were the food of slaves.

“But I’m not sure we were always in the right.”

Then he was gone.

@garius Older, and i'm not sure about ebook status, but Joe Harsh's demolition of the mythology surrounding Robert E. Lee and the Maryland Campaign of 1862 is brilliant and deserves to be better known. *Confederate Tide Rising* is a shorter book, covering Lee's time as military advisor to Jefferson Davis and Lee taking command of the eastern army during McClellan's peninsula campaign.

Outside the big battlefields the was much like modern civil wars. Including fast raiders terroizing and killing civilians, multiple terrorist plots and a bunch of supporting press or politicians pretending to be neutral by engaging in botherism.

the roots of Memorial Day may be found right at the end of the Civil War. Decoration Day arose spontaneously; Memorial Day as we know it was not actually a Federal Holiday until 1971.
Noted historian David Blight points at a commemoration by freed men and women in Charleston SC at the grave site for Federal soldiers as the first Decoration Day, although there is no actual consensus on this point.

April 9, 1865:

The Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee formerly surrenders to the Army of the Potomac under command General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox County, Virginia.

The surrender of General Lee caused a chain reaction of several surrenders of major Confederate formations which eventually led to the final collapse of the Confederate Army, ending the 4-year American civil war.

Fascism was defeated in World War Two like slavery was defeated in the American civil war -- forcibly replaced by systems incorporating the same functionality but with better camouflage.

Can the Army of the Potomac successfully execute General Hooker’s bold plan to outflank the Confederates, or will they themselves get flanked? Find out in Dave's review of Give Us Victories from Dissimula Edizioni.

March 8: a shot in for

For authenticity reasons, Clyde Bruckman and Buster Keaton's The General (1926) was – for the most part – filmed on location in Oregon. Set during the , it's a comedic retelling of a popular war memoir about the .

Sadly it was a box office , resulting in Keaton losing his independence and The General entering the as early as 1954. Luckily for us that means we too can enjoy the views of beautiful 1920s Oregon: yewtu.be/watch?v=YWm587wKKVw (note: this version has the appropriate piano score but appears to be a missing few minutes).

Wheatley Lead - Before and After

Mining in Phoenixville came to a standstill after an economic downturn in 1855. Attempts to get operations running again were stymied until the demand for lead increased with the American Civil War.

You can guess what for.

Bullets like these were fired by the millions, and it is easy to forget the geologic context that made such mass bloodshed possible.
