Most mornings the last few weeks have awakened to the sound of distant resonant croaking - one or two patrolling the sky at dawn. Almost never later in the day. My head canon (which might even be true) is that they are taking advantage of early morning quiet to come down from the hills and check out the near suburbs unharassed, before zillions of rambunctious come streaming out of their downtown night roost to take over the landscape.

Always so formal.

Mr. Crow is marching past the house; I almost expected a top hat and cane. 🎩

This is an American crow, and they are fascinating. But beware, I've read that crows can recognize faces and can hold a grudge.

"Crows sometimes make and use tools. Examples include a captive crow using a cup to carry water over to a bowl of dry mash; shaping a piece of wood and then sticking it into a hole in a fence post in search of food; and breaking off pieces of pine cone to drop on tree climbers near a nest." - allaboutbirds.org

American Crow.

Charlie and I were sitting in the backyard taking pictures of birds, about 30 minutes ago, when this crow flew by and landed near the top of a tall pine tree to the east. So, of course, I took some pictures. I generally have trouble with crows especially at a distance, and this photo is no different. For some reason birds that are all black are difficult. But the setting is good, and you can see the bird's eye which is a plus.

"American Crows congregate in large numbers in winter to sleep in communal roosts. These roosts can be of a few hundred up to two million crows. Some roosts have been forming in the same general area for well over 100 years. In the last few decades, some of these roosts have moved into urban areas where the noise and mess cause conflicts with people." - allaboutbirds.org

Being able to see my reflection in the eye of a bird I'm taking a picture of is definitely something the previous setup never allowed me to do. Definitely still figuring the new setup out, but it's fun. And I'm excited to have good quality pictures as a baseline, rather than a partial fluke.
