I've heard this song covered at about double time or time and a half, idk. Sure, cover bands interpret as they wish, but if you cover this, please don't do that. lols. Ok, morning rant over. I love this one. So soulful.

One of my fave Van Zandt songs. A personal essay of mine came out in a Van Zandt anthology this past spring. The anthology contains gritty stories, poems, and essays reflecting the spirit of Townes Van Zandt. Copies are available through Amazon for $10---https://a.co/d/4gCNQVm

"'The Big Rock Candy Mountains,' first recorded by Harry McClintock in 1928, is a country folk song about a hobo's idea of paradise, a modern version of the medieval concept of Cockaigne. It is a place where 'hens lay soft-boiled eggs' and there are 'cigarette trees.' McClintock said that he wrote the song in 1895, based on tales from his youth hoboing through the United States while working for the railroad as a brakeman.
"''Where Did You Sleep Last Night.' also known as 'Black Girl' and 'In the Pines,' is a traditional American folk song that dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. Lead Belly recorded several versions in the 1940s." Genius

"Emry Paul Arthur (September 17, 1902 – August 22, 1967) was an American Old-time musician. Arthur played an early version of the song Man of Constant Sorrow in 1928. Emry Arthur was born around the turn of the century in the Elk Spring Valley in Wayne County, Kentucky. His father collected old traditional songs from Kentucky and the entire family was known for their music in the area." Wikipedia
