As young #AmericanJews become increasingly alienated from #Israel, their disaffection may threaten the nation’s ties with the #UnitedStates.

This is important because while we can't understate the importance of Israeli culture in modern Jewry, even today 60% of Jews live outside Israel.

Just as we value Yiddish, and Ladino, and the amazing traditions and foods and celebrations from Jews from around the world, we need to cherish the experience of American Jews as part of our collective cultural history- to understand, to deconstruct, to celebrate, and sometimes to mourn.

At 11:15pm Pacific Time on December 25th, I decided to do one #Christmas thing after all, and that was to watch "Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas" on Air Canada's in-flight entertainment. It's a cute documentary worth watching.

But more importantly to me is implicit story of the way that American Jews created their own traditions, just as we've always created our traditions everywhere we've gone, for two thousand years.
