Finally found the bird that is singing 24/7, of course he was out singing when I took the photo. (Turdus migratorius). I think he has taken up permanent residency.

Saw American robins for the first time over the past week. A female jumping among the bushes in Downtown Manhattan and a male crossing the street in the suburbs of Long Island.

So how long before that idiot bird shows up to peck at his reflection in our transom window?

I like seeing large birds up close like that, but a crow would likely recognize it as not-a-bird. Which is good, because a crow would probably smash the window.

I grew up with the story that robins meant the return of spring. But, of course, they're here (and almost everywhere in the US) year-round. And while I like the idea that they remind us that spring will come again, they most often remind me that none of us has to be proof of anything but what we are right now.

Anyway: Solidarity with this , standing vigil in the snowfall.

American Robin
Actually a thrush, this ecologically versatile species is common throughout North America in both natural and built environments and seems to have benefitted from urban and agricultural expansion. During the spring and summer months Robins favor an invertebrate diet, switching to fruits in the fall and winter. Some populations are migratory, while others are year-round residents across their range.

American Robin

These birds pass over my back yard in flocks. I've tried to get a decent photo of one of those events but so far, the photos I've gotten are just a bunch of small silhouettes in the sky. But they do land occasionally.

" Early colonial settlers named the American Robin for its resemblance to the familiar but unrelated European Robin, which is smaller but also sports an orange breast and upright posture. Today, the American Robin exists in the form of seven subspecies, subtly differentiated by their body size and plumage, with the exception of one subspecies in southern Baja California, which sports pale gray-brown underparts in lieu of rusty tones." - audubon.org

I will never understand why so many people I know find plain or "boring." Despite their ubiquity here, I find them utterly beautiful and charming.

Surprise!

While we were walking this morning, this American robin landed right in front of me. I took a lot of very detailed pictures of the robin moving around. At one point, I even said out loud, "give me one more pose." I was planning on posting one of those, then I saw this photo of the bird flying across the road. I didn't know I captured that ... happy accident. 🙂

"Robins eat different types of food depending on the time of day: more earthworms in the morning and more fruit later in the day. Because the robin forages largely on lawns, it is vulnerable to pesticide poisoning and can be an important indicator of chemical pollution." - allaboutbirds.org

Blooming Sweet Gum Tree.

This sweet gum tree is already budding. One of the buds looks kind of like a robin.

"There are dozens of different bird species across the globe—chats, flycatchers, thrushes—that include the word “robin” in their common name. The American Robin belongs to the thrush family, which also includes bluebirds and solitaires." - audubon.org

American Robin

I took this photo a couple weeks ago. There was a lot of rain and the robins were on the ground looking for the worms that come to the surface. There was heavy noise in this photo, so the detail is lacking. I hope you enjoy it anyway.

Not sure, but I think this is an American Robin. Not a brilliant photograph as it was taken through a car window as we were passing.
