Beyond the treetops at Bybee Lake this morning, stream after stream of climbing into the sky and coursing toward the Columbia. Several consecutive flocks of over 100 gigantic white birds; tallying by 10s and 20s, I lost all count at a low estimate of 600 individuals. One flock circled back, gliding directly overhead. Without a single wingbeat - yet the still air struck a penetrating, ventriloquistic HISS across their feathers as they passed.

Early morning visit today to Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to the aforementioned , got nice looks at a flock of foraging in the pond, and an elegant pair of which are rare to the area.

Trouble with being on too many social medias and trying to find my footing is I forget to post things where they belong.

A quick drive around Harmon Reservoir and Stillwater NWR a few weeks ago to take some bird pictures. Too hot to really sit and watch so just got who was next to the road.

These two beautiful snowy white American White Pelicans were seen swimming in the glassy black waters of the bay mangroves. These gorgeous creatures are winter visitors to the Sunshine State and we look forward every October to their return to our coastal environs. A color, black and white photo.

Flying low.

This is and American white pelican flying low over water in the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Cameron Parish, Louisiana near the Gulf of Mexico. They kind of remind me of a flying boat or more accurately a flying boat reminds me of a pelican. This photo isn't quite as good as I hoped, but it'll do.

"One of the largest North American birds, the American White Pelican is majestic in the air. The birds soar with incredible steadiness on broad, white-and-black wings. Their large heads and huge, heavy bills give them a prehistoric look. On the water they dip their pouched bills to scoop up fish, or tip-up like an oversized dabbling duck. Sometimes, groups of pelicans work together to herd fish into the shallows for easy feeding. Look for them on inland lakes in summer and near coastlines in winter." - allaboutbirds.org

Caught this American White Pelican with “bottoms up” as it was going after its prey in a local estuary. While brown pelicans dive for their food, the American White forages for food while swimming along in the water. I liked the splash at it’s feet as it went head-first into the water.
