How to think about the impact of #AtlanticOcean meridional overturning circulation #AMOC possibly shutting down due to #ClimateChange.

(An oversimplification.)

Here in Northeast #USA we think of Northern Europe as our lateral equivalents.

Not true.

Draw a line out from the latitude of New York City, what do you hit?

Portugal.

Northern Europe is counterintuitively (for Americans) over from *Northern* #Canada. Great #Britain lines up with Labrador, North of Newfoundland. Pretty far North and... so why isn't Great Britain cold like Labrador?

That's due to the AMOC.

Think of it (vast oversimplification) as a gyre of water turning the Atlantic in a big circle. The current shoves warm water far North along Europe's Atlantic coastline. And reciprocally, it pushes cold water down to New England.

It also explains why Britain is famously foggy and rainy.

So what's going to happen if the AMOC shuts down?

Northwest #Europe will freeze, and New England will cook.

"An #AMOC collapse would be a massive, planetary-scale disaster. Some of the consequences: Cooling and increased storminess in northwestern Europe, major additional sea level rise especially along the American Atlantic coast, a southward shift of tropical rainfall belts (causing drought in some regions and flooding in others), reduced ocean CO2 uptake, greatly reduced oxygen supply to the deep ocean, likely ecosystem collapse in the northern Atlantic, and others."

Reading headlines of the #gulfstreamcollapse "collapse". Main stream journalists can't seem to tell us the difference between the gulf stream and the #AMOC, because apparently they think they are the same thing, which the scientists themselves agree they are not. The gulf stream is mainly driven by winds and there is no sign of winds stopping. That's good, because winds are driven by the sun and if the sun cools, well that's it for everything. And the thermalhaline circulation of the AMOC contributes a small amount to that gulf circulation. Which I get, doesn't mean the collapse of the AMOC is not serious or imminent, but I'd like to get the real story not sensationalism. Which makes me kind of not trust articles coming out of publications like #theguardian or #thenewyorktimes and other main stream publication that parrot each other.

@CharityFeb I saw some reports recently about changes to the Gulf Stream which I guess is (part of) this #AMOC. I remember as a child being told that without this stream of warm water flowing north UK would have a very different climate, more like New Foundland. Seriously scary.

@gretathunberg @bert_hubert @EU_Commission @eurocaro @FTM_nl And yes, reduction in #fossile fuels is a much better way to control #climatechange, but we are in too deep to rely on it as the only measure.
And co2 storage just doesn't work at scale. #stratosphericInjection does work and testing and research should begin asap.

Your conclusion is not based on your arguments that's how.
And 2: scientists have been saying this a long time. There's not nearly enough action to avoid #climateCrisis. And on top of that earth this year is showing us #ClimateChange is happening much faster and also differently than models predicted. #amoc
